MAT NOTES:
The reigning League III champions T-Birds have two returning All-County matmen; Miguel Lozano and Ryan Monahan. The Patriots have Jace Yannuciello. Both Monahan and Yannuciello finished 5th at the 2022 county meet and are potential county champions. Connetquot is currently ranked ninth in Suffolk County and the WM Patriots landed on the Honorable Mention list.
In 1956, Pete Venier (Wantagh) won the 130-pound Long Island title, also claiming a LI title that year was Friends of LI Wrestling president, Jerry Seckler (157) for Valley Stream Central. Pete later attended Colgate University where he was a standout wrestler from 1956 to 1960.
The SWOA also presented a plaque and gift to Pete from Chad Smith, a veteran and top mat official for the past 31 years, who refereed the dual meet.
CHS head coach Bill Santoro and longtime friend of Venier recently said: "Everybody loves Pete and tonight's tribute is a way of giving back to Pete after all he has done for our sport for the past 44 years."
