MAT NOTES:

Defending Suffolk County champion, Sayville HS hosted Suffolk's top-ranked East Islip HS, the 2022 Gray/Fitzgerald tournament champions, in a dual amongst the top teams in the county.

The meet was held at a classic venue - the Old Junior High School - on Greeley Avenue at 6:30 PM - following the JV competition matches, which Sayville prevailed 36-28.

The first four matches were highly contested, but perhaps the most entertaining was the action packed back-and-forth bout at 126 pounds. Sayville's Matt Reina used a headlock to emerge with a 9-3 verdict. After league champion Leo Mongiello (Sayville) received a forfeit at 132, the dual was knotted at 12-12.

East Islip responded by reeling off eight straight victories, including a lightning quick pancake takedown by Justin Shayew with a 14 second fall at 138 pounds. Other first period pins were registered by James Sturek (189) and Deandrea Perez who scored with a reversal and bar arm for the fall at the 1:45 mark in the 215-pound bout. State finalist, junior Sebastian Regis, received a forfeit at 285 to conclude the meet.

Sayville head coach, Gary Pesko, has been at the helm for 28 years and involved in the program for 33 years. Able assistant coaches, Frank Esposito and Maverick Passaro will have the Golden Flashes ready to contend for the top spot in the league and county tournament.

East Islip head coach, Mike Longobardi, took over in 2016, after former coach the legendary Guy Leggio retired. Longobardi had been with Leggio during his tenure. Longobardi said this about his EI team: "Going into the season we should have a solid wrestler in all the weight classes, but now moving forward, we will have a very well-balanced line-up." The Redmen have venerable assistant coach Joe Esposito along with Jakob Restreppo, they will be ready to vie for both the Suffolk dual and county tournament titles. The formidable dual squad look to secure a berth in the NYS Dual Meet Championships in Syracuse.

The official for the meet was veteran Bill Starke, he now enters his impressive 57th season on the mat.
