MAT NOTES:
Clovis West, California is currently ranked third in the nation according to Amateur Wrestling News. They are a perennial power in the Golden State, one of only three states that have a single classification for their championship, Indiana and New Jersey are the others. Of the 15 Eastern Classic champions, only four are reigning NYS champions, Vito Arujau,Nick Piccininni,William Koll and Rich Sisti. Look for a Nassau County final rematch with Arujau vs Quinn and a Suffolk County final with Restrepo and Dutton.
Hauppauge HS (15-0 in duals ) finished in third place (out of 127 teams) and had the best showing amongst New York teams. Head coach Chris Messina has been at the helm since the 1981-1982 season and attributes the team's success to their unbelievable work ethic. He recently stated: "The kids wrestle in the off season and everyday at practice they do extra drilling, sprints and lifting, the entire team is committed to the sport." The Eagles had four place winners at the Eastern States; 8th-grader Jake Silverstein (3rd at 99), freshman Ben Tepperman (22-4, 3rd at 106), sophomore Chris Mauriello (27-1, runner-up at 132) and junior Francisco Bisono (20-6, 8th at 152). Look for the Eagles to be a solid contender for the Suffolk County team title in February.
