MAT NOTES:

     The prestigious ESC Tournament is now in its 20th year and the 2024 edition featured over 500 wrestlers from 150 high schools and had seven states represented for the two-day event. 

     The MOW Award went to freshman Gavin Mangano (33-1, 99-3 career) of SWR in the loaded 124-pound bracket. His only loss this season was a close decision to his teammate, senior Chris Colon (33-3,145-20).

     Other Long Island champions that are having stellar seasons and are currently top-ranked in their respective weight classes in the state; Long Beach sophomore Dunia Sibomano (26-2, 101-11 career) at 108, along with a pair of unbeatens, Brayden Fahrbach (27-0, 195-15) of Mt. Sinai at 138 and Herricks senior Joe Manfredi (21-0, 209-9) at 145 pounds. That elite group will be tough to beat and will vie for state titles in February.

     ESC champions; PJ Duke (28-0) and Elijah Diakomihalis (29-0) are only juniors, both have committed to their college choices. Duke will attend Penn State and Diakomihalis will stay near home and join the Big Red squad at Cornell.

     According to the Amateur Wrestling News, the Empire State has two number one ranked wrestlers in the nation; the aforementioned Duke (152) and his teammate Zach Ryder (182). The 17-year old Ryder will forego his senior year at Minisink Valley and take classes via online. He will join the elite wrestling club of his college choice ,Penn State. Another nationally ranked wrestler is Cameron Catrabone (ranked 6th at145), a state champion from Williamsville North, who dropped a 2-1 decision in the ESC finals to Duke. Catrabone will take his mat skills to the University  of Michigan in the fall. His dad, Jeff, was a three-time All-American (7-3-3) in the mid 1990s for the Wolverines.
