Chris Coleman of East Islip won the 170 pound weight class.
Leo Mongiello from Sayville won the 145 pound weight class.
Finnegan O'Brien from Chaminade won the 131 pound weight class.
MAT NOTES:
Connetquot, a perennial League II power, captured the team title over top teams from Nassau, Suffolk and CHSAA contender, Chaminade. At the helm for the T-Birds is legendary and National Hall of Fame coach, BillSantoro (46 years) and able assistant AnthonyMelfi. They recently won the Doc Fallot Duals at Hampton Bays with key wins over Islip (52-15) and Nassau power Oceanside (35-30), and now have an impressive dual record at 7-0.
Winning their respective weight classes at the tournament were Sayville's Leo Mongiello (145) and Brentwood's Jason Kwaak (160). Both finished fourth at the 2024 state meet and Kwaak has commited to NC State next season.
The Flyers had three winners; Lou Kennedy (124), highly-regarded freshman Finnegan O'Brien (a Division II state bronze medalist formerly from Locust Valley) and tough Jake Nieto (a Plainedge transfer). Head coach, Scott Cole has an impressive 90 wrestlers on the squad along with an entourage of ten coaches.
Host Sayville also had three champions, junior and league champion Ayden LaBella, who rolled through the 101-pound bracket, the aforementioned LeoMongiello and grid iron star, county medalist sophomore Javen Taff at 215 pounds. The Golden Flashes head coach, Gary Pesko and assistant Frank Esposito,will have his talented team ready to challenge for league and county team awards.
East Islip, 2023 Suffolk team champions, had two winners, junior Rocco DeStefano (108) and Christopher Coleman (170). Both are returning all-county performers and will vie for county titles this season.
Smithtown East had a strong showing with their third place team finish and have veteran coach Jack Truncale (41 years) in the program. Returning county medalist DylanReinard edged Connetquot's all-county Julian Medina, 2-0, in the 118-pound final and teammate freshman Matt McDermott, a Suffolk bronze medalist dropped a close decision to Finnegan O'Brien at 131 pounds.
Javen Taff from Sayville won the 215 pound weight class.
Brentwood's all-state performer Jason Kwaak is in control and picked up a fall and won the 160 pound weight class.
CONNETQUOT (302 points) WINS SAYVILLE'S GRAY/FITZGERALD TOURNAMENT OVER EAST ISLIP (230) and SMITHTOWN EAST (226), along with many other top teams.
