NCAA PREVIEW
Defending NCAA team champion Penn State are the solid favorite at the 94th annual NCAA Championships in Philadelphia, PA, on March 20th-22nd, 2025. The Nittany Lions boast three NCAA champions, including four-time titlist Carter Starocci (84-2 career) at 184, Levi Haines (174) and Greg Kerkvliet (4-0, 78 wins) at 285, along with NCAA finalist and top-ranked Mitchell Messenbrink at 165.
Other top-tier teams are Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma State with rookie coach David Taylor and the Tommy Ryan (Wantagh HS) Buckeyes of Ohio State, always a contender. They will have back two-time NCAA runner-up Sammy Sasso now at 165.
Seven other returning NCAA champions are in the field, Richard Figueroa (125), Jesse Mendez , 2023 winner Andrew Alirez, both at 141, Caleb Henson (149), two-time champion Keegan O’Toole (174), Parker Keckeisen (184) and the recent return of two-time NCAA champ and Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson (3-0, 90-2 career) at 285.
The Empire State has two returning All-Americans; Anthony Noto (91-16) of HFalls-Lima HS and NCAA finalist Jacori Teemer (89-15 career) of Long Beach HS. Other highly-regarded NY natives are Stevo Poulin (Shenendehowa HS), Greg Diakomihalis (Hilton HS-Cornell), Max Gallagher (Bayport HS-UPenn), all at 125, Jordan Titus (Center Moriches HS-West Virginia -141), Willie McDougald (Niagara Falls HS-Oklahoma), Colin Realbuto (Somers HS-Northern Iowa), both at 149. Others are Tommy Askey (Pine Bush HS) and Cory Day (Iroquois HS-285), now at Binghamton.
Cornell, 2024 NCAA team runners-up, return a solid and well balanced dual squad. The BigRed recently shutout Buffalo (37-0) and return NCAA bronze medalist MeyerShapiro (157), along with title contenders, rugged Julian Ramirez (165) and Chris Foca at 184. Cornell has an outstanding lightweight corps: with Greg Diakomihalis ( 5 NYS titles, 9-0), BrettUngar (133- both a NJ and PA state champion) and Vince Cornella (141-4 Colorado state crowns). The Big Red will be favored at the inaugural Ivy League Championships, scheduled for Sunday, March 9th, 2025 in the historic Jadwin Gymnasium on the campus of Princeton University. Rounding out the team contingent will be Brown, Columbia, Harvard and UPenn. In both 1975 and 1981, the NCAA Championships were at the NJ site and Iowa won the team title in both years. In 1975, Suffolk County had four AAs, Nick Gallo (4th at 118- Deer Park HS-Hofstra), Brentwood's Bob Antonacci (5th at 126) and Pete Galea (4th at 150), along with Willie Gadson (3rd at 177-Huntington HS), all competed at Iowa State. Another Suffolk star, Jack Spates (Smithtown HS- Slippery Rock), was top-seeded at 118, but didn't place in 1975. He was a returning NCAA runnerup.
