Wantagh's Jonathan Loew tries to turn Lindenhurst's Max Sims. Loew won this 160 pound quarterfinal 6-4.

King Park's Sam Schuyler works to turn Central Square's Isaac Havens at 195 pounds. The top seeded Schuyler won 10-0.

2017 NEW YORK STATE TOURNAMENT PRELIMS AND QUARTERS

Hauppauge's Jake Silverstein works to turn Baldwinsville's Jeremy Pond in 138 pound quarterfinal action in the NYS Intersectional Tournament. Silverstein won 7-2 to advance into tomorrow's semis.

     Section Eleven (Suffolk County) leads the 55th NYSPHSAA Championships with 114.5 points ahead of Section Five (Rochester area) with 84 and Section VIII (Nassau County ) with 80 points. The blue-clad contingent advanced 17 wrestlers into the semifinal round and were led by reigning state champions sophomore  Adam Busiello (33-1) of ESM at 120 and Terron Robinson (37-1) of Walt Whitman at 220 pounds. Busiello posted a first period fall and registered an 11-1 major decision over previously unbeaten Trent Nadeau (Columbia-2) and Robinson edged Mason Mastrangelo (Lancaster-6) 3-2. Section Five were paced By Hilton state kings Greg Diakomihalis (44-0) who scored a 20-5 tech fall over Matt Romano (Valley Central-9) at 113 and Louie DePrez (46-0) who used a barrage of snap-spin takedowns en route to a 23-8 tech fall over Joey Yanis (Minisink Valley-9) at 182, along with Frankie Gissendanner (43-1) of Penfield who defeated two LI opponents: Phil Spadafora (2:34 pin) and Anthony Sobotker (12-3) at 145. Nassau defending three-time state champions Jacori Teemer (26-1) of Long Beach and Syosset's Vito Arujau (35-0) rolled through the brackets, Teemer had a wild 16-10 verdict over Lucas King (New Hartford-3) at 132 and Arujau clamped both of his opponents in the 138-pound class.The other Division I returning state winner that went unscathed was Ryan Ferro (36-0) of Warwick at 160 pounds.

     Some interesting LI match-ups saw Hunter Scutellaro (Massapequa) defeat Kevin DePalma (Farmingdale), 6-2, Anthony Cirillo (Rocky Point) posted a first period fall over Joe Simons (Farm), both at 120, Chris Gomez (Pat-Medford) scored with a double leg takedown to eke out a 5-4 win over LB's Matt Maquet at 132. At 160 pounds Jonathan Loew (50-1) of Wantagh hit a slick duck-under takedown in overtime to edge Max Sims (Lindenhurst), 6-4,  two-time state finalist Peter Pappas (36-0) defeated nemesis Tyrese Byron (LB), 5-3, both at 160, and Amityville junior Deonte Wilson (35-2) needed an overtime escape to defeat tough Ryan O'Shea (32-2) of MacArthur, 2-1, in the 285-pound class. In the Division II Tournament the Locust Valley duo of state champions Jonathan Gomez (126) and Hunter Dusold (132) moved into the semifinals; Gomez had a 5-3 victory and Dusold recorded two near falls to emerge with a 6-2 decision.
