MAT NOTES:
The Long Island contingent had a great showing at the 62nd annual NYSPHSAA Championships, as Section XI finished as team runners-up and Section VIII landed in fifth place in the sectional scoring. Both sections emerged with a pair of state champions and had three other finalists.
Winning titles for the Suffolk squad were freshman Camryn Howard (52-2) of Bellport and Brentwood senior Jason Kwaak (41-0, 159-8 career). Howard stunned top-seeded Samson McKissick-Staley (Pittsford-5) with pin at the 1:14 mark of their 138-pound bout. Kwaak, a NC State commit, posted two first period falls and a 12-2 major decision in the finals at 160. Kwaak joins a legacy of state champions from Brentwood, dating back to 1968 when CarlAdams won the 154-pound class and became the school's first state winner.
The Nassau team was paced by four-time state placer and two-time champ junior Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez (1-3-2-1) of Long Beach. His life has been a combination of heartbreak and hope, and he scored with a pancake in overtime to pin nemesis Cooper Merli (Newburgh-9), 44 seconds in the extra period. The North Carolina commit became legendary coach Ray Adams' 18th state champion. Eighth-grader and sixth-seeded Jon Tutku (50-1) had an impressive run to the state crown. He defeated the #3 seed, the #2 seed and in the 101-pound championship bout, he posted a solid 8-2 verdict over top-seeded Tanner Catrabone (St. Francis-C). Tutku became the Chiefs fourth NYS champion, their first was Steve Whelan at 250 pounds in 1982.
Suffolk County had two underclassmen reach the finals, EH sophomore Austin Bronco Campsey (34-3) at 108 and freshman Matthew McDermott (41-4) of Smithtown East at 131. Nassau County had a silver medalist with Eric Wolf (40-6) of dual meet champion Farmingdale at 152 pounds.
In Division I, Long Island had a total of 30 grapplers that earned All-State accolades.
Long Island wrestling had seven grapplers that earned state bronze medals:
101- Xavier Seabury (42-2) - North Babylon-11
108- Ethan Andreula (42-4) - Long Beach-8

124- Finnegan O'Brien (31-6) - Chaminade-C
131- Anthony Severino (46-3) - Lindenhurst-11- he won 5 matches to finish third.
170- Jonathan Hoffman (30-1) - Kellenberg-C - his only loss was to Duke in the semis
190- Josh Jorgge (43-4) - St. Anthony's-C
Only five wrestlers went unscathed on the season; Will Soto (48-0), Evin Gursoy (35-0), the aforementioned Kwaak, four-time state king PJ Duke (45-0) and the 11th seeded Zane Kropman (11-0). LI added a trio of two-time champions, John Glenn's Tommy Aiello (40-3, 151-15), an LIU commit, rallied for an exciting 7-4 OT victory by quickly scoring on a takedown twenty seconds into the overtime stanza. Junior Devin Downes (46-4) of Plainedge. Downes, an University of Maryland commit, rolled through the 190-pound bracket. CSH's Greyson Meak (43-3, 198-30) dominated his 215- pound weight class and will take his mat skills to UPenn next season. In Division II, there were nine wrestlers that earned All-State honors.
