The Sayville Golden Flashes (7-0) upended rival Islip (7-5) in a hotly contested League VI showdown dual meet at Sayville HS. The #5 ranked Golden Flashes were paced by state medalist Leo Mongiello (9-0, 146-20 career), as he used a series of takedowns and tilts en route to a convincing 16-1 tech fall at 152 pounds and junior Ayden LaBella (7-0), a returning league champion, scored with his fireman’s carry and tilts for a 15-0 win at 108. The dual started with Steven Mercorella tossing his opponent for a first period pin and then sophomore all-county performer Javen Taff (9-1) used a blast double and tight bar arm to secure the fall at the 3:00 minute mark of the 285-pound bout and a 23-0 team lead.

The Islip Bucaneers battled back through the middleweights and reeled off four consecutive wins with Joe Frangelia (116), Matthew Peterson (124) and Cartier Perez (131). In a pivotal bout, league champion Jack Whitehouse converted a slick single leg takedown and bar arm for a third period pin which brought the team score to 23-21.

At 190 pounds, Alex LaBella, clinched the dual as he flattened his foe with exciting pin midway through the second period and treated the home crowd to a great team victory.
