Mat Notes:

     Defending state champions Zach Redding  and four-time titlist Adam Busiello  of ESM registered falls in their semi-final bouts. Redding had a third period fall over Marvin Lobo (Copiague) and Busiello used a tight bar-arm to flattened Joe Kasten (Connetquot) in the first period. Busiello had three first period falls in his three bouts and will take his mat skills to Arizona State next season. State finalist and Penn-bound Joey Slackman of Commack has three falls thus far in the tournament -15 seconds, 1:00 and a 1:31 pin, he secured the fall with a tight half over Longwood's Elijah Stowe in the 285-pound semifinal match. Redding (46-2), Busiello (45-0, 276-8 career) and Slackman (42-0) all won in the finals. Sayville's top-seeded Joe Lopresti (37-1) scored with a third period snap-spin takedown to edge Central Islip's Malachi Lord-Kelly (33-2), 3-2, at 182. Liam McIntrye (40-0) of Westhampton Beach used a barrage of takedowns and bar-arm tilts en route to a convincing 17-1 tech fall over  Jaylyn Barber (Bay Shore) at 195. Only three Suffolk wrestlers remained unbeaten: Busiello, McIntrye and Slackman.

Defending Suffolk champion, North Babylon's Sean Carter works for a takedown on Rocky Point's Evan Matias. Carter won this 120 pound semi, with a 8-4 verdict.


                            HAUPPAGE WINS SUFFOLK TOURNAMENT

                                               

     Hauppauge won their third Suffolk County team title in the past five years in a back-and-forth contest with runner-up Eastport-South Manor, 167.5 points to 165. The Eagles crowned three champions, all juniors, led by two-time titlist Danny Mauriello (39-2), state bronze medalist Luke Smith (34-3) and Michael Tyrell (34-4) who upset top-seeded Joe Lopresti (37-2), 8-2, in the 182-pound final. Smith rolled through the 113-pound bracket and Mauriello needed a scramble takedown to edge nemesis Stefan Major (Kings Park), 5-3 in overtime and was voted the Champion of Champions Award. ESM was paced by four-time state champion and six-time Suffolk winner Adam Busiello (45-0), who registered four first period  pins and dominated the 138-pound field, teammate and reigning state winner, junior, Zach Redding (46-4) coasted to his second county crown at 126. North Babylon's's Sean Carter (37-2) won his second title and looks to improve on his 4th place state finish at the 2018 state meet. State finalist and Penn-bound Joey Slackman (42-0) of Commack flattened all four foes and claimed the Most Pins Award with four falls in 3:22. Other Suffolk stalwarts included winners: freshman Jared Weinhaus (45-4), Kwesi Amoa (32-2), state placer Logan Sciotto (48-4), Jonathan Spadafora (38-1), top-ranked in the state at 145, sophomore Jackson Hulse (160) and MOW Paul Illicete (37-3) of Copiague at 170. Other winners were state placer and unbeaten Liam McIntryre (35-0) at 195 and Pat-Med's Dylan Gianikos (36-3) at 220. Returning state medalists that will be in the NYS Championships mix are Thomas DiResta (32-6) at 113 and Corey Connolly (44-5) in the 170-pound class. Two county finalists that suffered their first loss in championship bouts were Elijah Rivera (38-1) and Ryan Meisner (40-1), both will earn wild card berths at the 2019 state meet. 



Jeff Tancsik of Centereach works for a takedown at 160 pounds and won 5-4 to advance to the final.

Dan Mauriello of Hauppauge works for a throw in 152 pound action. Mauriello won this semifinal. Mauriello went on to win in the finals and was voted Champion of Champions as Hauppauge won the team title over ESM and Rocky Point.

Pat Med's Dylan Gianikos need this late takedown to win, 6-4, at 220 pounds.

Hauppauge's Luke Smith won this 113 pound semifinal with a 6-0 shutout.
