MAT NOTES:
Plainview upset Calhoun, 52-27, as the Hawks won nine bouts and registered eight falls in the dual meet. The Hawks' head coach Pat Morgan had top performances from Cooper Dorf who used a tight cross-face cradle for a first period pin in his 126-pound bout, all-county Max Yahre who clamped his opponent in 42 seconds and Travis Edrehl at 170 pounds. Calhoun won the first two bouts, as Ray Adams (18-6) used a barrage of takedowns and bar-arm tilts en route to a 18-3 tech fall at 106 and James Gallo posted a fall at 113 pounds to give the Colts a short-lived 11-0 lead. Head coach Peter Marques and able assistant Dane Nordland also got wins from Nate Bastien who scored with his double leg take downs for a 15-4 major decision at 145 and Michael Patti with a first period fall at 160.
Calhoun hosted Alumni Night and honored legendary New York State and National Wrestling Hall-of-Fame coach Bob Bury who compiled a dual meet mark of 200-77-6 over his 23-year tenure. Bury coached two NCAA champions (Tom Schlendorf and John Walter), along with eight state champions, including his son Bob (1976-77-78). Some of the noted alumni in attendance were; state finalists - Wally Jaskot and Vin Paolano, son Rich Bury, Mike Davey (South Side HS) and match official John Hamilton (a 1970 alum). His National Hall-of-Fame plaque was presented by coordinator Ed Gould and Hamilton during a mid-match ceremony and now will proudly be displayed at Calhoun High School.
